thebeginning

faustinoalberti, coming from campo san martino (near padua), moves for thefirst time to the province of varese (lombardy) during world war i,because he must accomplish the military service in tradate in themotorcycle firm 'frera'. coming back home, he is entrusted with themaintenance of agricultural machineries of the 'breda' familybusiness.
in 1937,attracted by better working opportunities, he moves to varese, butwithout settling there definitely, and opens there a mechanicalconstruction company for bicycles in belforte street. in differentmoments his sons follow him: alberto, teacher and afterwardsemployee at the central government of the 'breda' firm in milan,antenore, arnaldo and adelio, all of them working in the firm'macchi'. a daughter, lina, also moves to varese in 1938, workingat the 'cornelia conciaria' (tannery). meanwhile, the familybusiness begins a parallel activity of mechanical workings andbuilds the first prototype of a machine for the leather andfootwear industry.

in 1945 thefirm 'barenghi' in milan, which imports machines for the leatherindustry from 'fortuna' in germany, offers the alberti theopportunity to build a skiving machine by giving them the necessarymachinery to be paid by means of successive works. alberto albertiis convinced by his brothers to leave his job at 'breda' in orderto run the newly founded family business. in 1947, 'alberti' isregistered at the chamber of commerce : the promoting partners arethe brothers arnaldo, adelio and emma pierobon, wife of antenore,who died in 1947 : arnaldo deals with the public relations and withthe trade, adelio deals with the production and with the personnel;emma pierobon, too, engages herself in the administration. alreadyin 1948 the firm 'fratelli alberti' ('alberti brothers') tries tocross the national borders by beginning negotiations with a firm inargentina, in order to export its products in thatcountry.

the'50s and the '60s

the firmtakes wholly part to the economic 'boom' of this time. beginningwith the ' 50s, the production is based on two different sectors:the machines for the leather and footwear industry and themotorcycles, the latter due to the common racing passion of thethree brothers.
in 1954 beginsthe production of internal-combustion engines for motorcycles. inthis field, several constructor of the region become costumers ofthe 'fratelli alberti' : first 'ganna' in varese, then 'parilla','guzzi', 'bianchi' and also 'harley-davidson-aermacchi'.

also in 1954the firm changes into a copartnership, giving work to about 50people.
but already inthe early ' 60s, the motorcycle engine sector is progressively leftin order to build machines for the footwear industry, since thissector is more rentable. actually in this period the firm registersthe first patents concerning improvements applied to themachines.

the'70 and the '80s
in 1975 adelio begins to produce bellknives separately. these essential spare parts of the skivingmachines are not dealt with by his fellow partners: this way adeliohopes to give his five children a chance to keep on with the trade,otherwise he thinks there might be too many heirs to share theoriginal family business.
in 1978 arnaldoleaves the firm and gives away his shares to the brother and to hissister-in-law. in 1981 luigi alberti, son of adelio, replaces hisuncle alberto as manager and the firm becomes a limited companyagain.
the ' 80s arestill positive for the firm, taking part to the fairs of the sectorand exporting its products ever more. but at the end of the decade,emma pierobon leaves the firm and to pay her share, being 50% ofthe total amount, and thus 'fratelli alberti' is not able toincrease the business.

fromthe '90s until today

during the '90s the foreign competition rises highly : the manufacturing ofmachines for the leather and footwear industry moves more and moreto countries offering lower costs of labour: this puts an end tothe advantage of the 'fratelli alberti', whose machines belong to atechnologically superior category.
therefore''fratelli alberti' decides to found a society in china, one of thepromoting partners coming from hong kong, in order to be presentdirectly in a market where in the mean time 80% of the worldfootwear is produced. to contrast the crisis of the footwearmachines (sales in foreign countries have fallen by 45% in just afew years), the firm rises the selling of spare parts.
the productionof spare parts makes up nowadays about half of fratelli alberti'stotal turnover.

in may 2010,after a life devoted to work and to the company, mr. adelioalberti, known to everyone as ‘sandro’, who was the life and soulof the fratelli alberti company, has passed away. 

the firm isstill led by members of the alberti family: among the 27 people(managers, employees and workers) there are today adelio's fivechildren, two sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law.
